One of the features of 2018 politics was the ascension of the Right’s favorite young, upstart Socialist defeating a longtime Democratic incumbent in the U.S. House of Representatives. At first, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gave mainstream and conservative outlets much ignorant fodder and sound bites to howl over. But what was justified criticism over her early mistakes of showing off her ignorance is crossing into self-defeating pointlessness and gaining her defense from fair-minded conservatives.

The latest bizarre attempts to embarrass and mock AOC are backfiring, and today’s is also the lamest yet.

A tweet from an “Anonymous” account — whether it’s actually affiliated with the anarchist group is unknown — contained a video of a younger AOC, back when she was in school, performing the iconic dance from the 80s classic brat pack movie, The Breakfast Club.

With the caption, “Here is America’s favorite commie know-it-all acting like the clueless nitwit she is… …High School video of “Sandy” Ocasio-Cortez”

Except, having fun in high school with friends, doing a rendition of one of the most well-known scenes from a great movie, doesn’t make anyone a “clueless nitwit.” It just makes them look relatable. Most of all, it’s bipartisan goofing around that even conservatives can get behind.

And as my colleague Kimberly Ross tweeted, “If you’re going to spend energy trying to make someone look bad, do it by demolishing their ideological leanings, not showing us a video of them when they were a teenager…acting as teenagers act. This only makes them more relatable.”

The only difference between someone under 35 to anyone older is the availability to have our goofy moments easily recorded and put on the internet. Continuing to lambast AOC for being a kid once is mean-spirited in its intent and self-defeating in its result.
