Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) spoke to NBC News this week and made some disturbing remarks about President Trump and the Trump family.

From the report:

“Adolf Hitler was elected chancellor of Germany. And he went about the business of discrediting institutions to the point that people bought into” it,” he said. “Nobody would have believed it now. But swastikas hung in churches throughout Germany. We had better be very careful.”

McCain was a “hero of our United States armed services,” Clyburn said, adding that Trump was targeting him just like he’d sought to discredit previous presidents, the Congress, and the free press.

“We are asking for dire consequences. And I think it’s time for the Congress — House and Senate — to grow spines, and do what is necessary to protect this democracy. This man and his family are the greatest threats to democracy of my lifetime,” he said.

Watch the video segment of Clyburn’s remarks below:

This is the second time this year Clyburn, the third ranking Democrat in the House, has made the comparison. Back in January, he expressed a similar sentiment in an interview with CNN‘s Don Lemon:

“Having studied history and having taught history, I can only equate one period of time with what we are experiencing now and that was what was going on in Germany around 1934 right after the 1932 elections when Adolf Hitler was elected chancellor,” Clyburn said.

“He began to do things to discredit the media, to disrupt the judicial system and if you recall from your studies, they had swastikas hung in churches all over Germany.”

Forgive me if Clyburn’s incendiary rhetoric rings hollow. He said nothing about how abhorrently the Obama administration treated Fox News and spied on journalists. He also looked the other way over that same administration’s deliberate use of the IRS to target conservative groups.

Worst of all, Clyburn refuses to condemn actual Hitler-like rhetoric, tactics, and/or associations from his own party – including from Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and the Congressional Black Caucus, of which he is a longtime member. As I’ve written previously:

The CBC has a cozy relationship with – surprise! – Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan, who is anti-Semitical to the core.

Clyburn himself has shared the same stage as Farrakhan, and refused to condemn him when pressed on the issue in 2018 by The Daily Caller.

This man has stood shoulder to shoulder with the anti-Semitical Louis Farrakhan. He’s attempted to diminish the horrific experiences of Holocaust survivors and their families in order to make excuses for Rep. Omar’s anti-Semitism, and yet he continues to equate President Trump to Hitler.

We should respect his comments why again?
