"Airplanes Took Aim": NY Times Shamefully Goes the Ilhan Omar Route in Describing How 9/11 Happened

Five months ago, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) said “some people did something” in a CAIR speech she gave where she talked about the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks. The “some people” she was referring to, of course, were the radical Islamic terrorists who “did something” by committing the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 innocent people.

Outrage was swift and came from many corners including from President Trump. The New York Post published a brutal front page reminder in response to Omar’s reprehensible comments:

Unfortunately, on the 18th anniversary of 9/11 it seems that the New York Times took a page from Omar’s book in characterizing the horrific events of that awful day.

In a now-deleted tweet they posted early this morning, the paper wrote that “airplanes took aim” at the World Trade Center, rather than noting terrorists “took aim.” They also noted the WTC was where “more than 2,000 people died” rather than accurately reporting it was where “nearly 3,000 people” were killed. Here are a couple of screen captures of the original tweet:

Not only was that how the tweet was written, but the actual story originally contained the same language:

Shorter New York Times: Some airplanes did something.

After a wave of criticism from Twitter users, the story was changed, but it still fell short by saying “people died” instead of “people were killed” (bolded emphasis added):

Once more, families gathered at ground zero, where nearly 3,000 people died on that bright September morning. Once more, there was an outpouring of grief. Once more, there was the sound of a bell tolling in mourning. And there was the rhythm of names being recited.

Eighteen years have passed since terrorists commandeered airplanes to take aim at the World Trade Center and bring them down.

The paper then posted an updated version of the tweet noting the correct number of people killed in the terror attacks (rather than the airplane attacks):

There is just no excuse, zero, zilch, nada, for the way this story was first presented. How many editors did it pass through before it went to publication? And for it to be done by the so-called “newspaper of record”, which is headquartered in the city that faced the brunt of the 9/11 attacks, it’s just flat out unacceptable.

I would be shocked if they don’t see a rise in people unsubscribing after today. Between the anti-Semitism, the TDS that clouds the judgment of their mainstream media reporters, and now this, the New York Times is literally not worth the paper it is written on anymore.
