Donald and Melania Trump

That the media/left despise First Lady Melania Trump is not exactly breaking news, but if you’d have told me at the beginning of the month that I’d be writing three pieces in one week about their appalling treatment of her, I’d have laughed and said “no way.”

As it turns out, that’s exactly the way this week shaped up after a series of bizarre and uncalled for attacks made their way onto the pages of supposedly “reputable” news outlets like CNN and the Washington Post.

To quickly recap before I get into the Washington Post’s latest attack, on Tuesday Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) ripped the mainstream media over their unhinged attacks not only on Mrs. Trump’s White House Christmas decoration selections but also on her fashion choices:

Two days later, I wrote a VIP post where I tried to make the case that in no way does First Lady Trump deserve the type of scorn she receives from the media. In referencing “news” reports about an unauthorized biography of Mrs. Trump (written by a CNN writer) that alleges she and the President keep separate bedrooms, I opined:

Reporting on her priorities as first lady, her travels, and her public appearances with the president are stories you’d expect and demand the press focus on and even scrutinize. But gossipy snippets about something so personal as alleged sleeping arrangements? I’m sorry, but that’s just beyond the pale and is frankly the type of “news” that should be off limits for reporting, at least while both of them are still in public office.

It’s demeaning and insulting and crosses the boundaries of basic dignity and respect that should be given to all first ladies on personal issues of this nature, regardless of party.

The latest Washington Post hit on Melania Trump again revolves around her fashion choices. Lifestyle columnist Monica Hesse wrote Thursday:

Is there symbolism in everything Melania Trump does, or not? Is Melania Trump playing five-dimensional chess against the rest of her checkers-playing family, or not? Will we ever know? Does it even matter? Does your pointed commentary about the administration’s immigration policy matter, if, to understand you’ve commented at all, the American public must intimately know the shopping habits of your grown stepdaughter?

Truly, which is the more unsettling interpretation of Melania Trump? That all of the odd stuff she’s done has been intentional, but she’s bizarrely choosing to communicate in fashion code, rather than to communicate using any one of the five human languages she speaks? Or that she has no plan at all — that she wakes up and throws on pussy bows and sloganed jackets, and nobody surrounding her thinks to say, Hmm? That the rest of the country is merrily rolling toward pandemonium, and meanwhile she’s again planning her holiday decorations six months in advance?

I have wondered whether Melania Trump is a genius. I have wondered whether she’s an idiot. I have wondered why I wonder about her at all.

And a lot of of people reading that column are wondering if Hesse has anything better to do than to ridicule another woman simply because she’s unsure if the woman is “communicating in [political] fashion code” or not with her clothing choices.

Good grief.

I’m so old I remember when “journalists” and woke political commentators talked about how obsessing over a female public figure’s outfits set women back 50 years. I guess this is just another one of those standards that are selectively applied based upon the target’s political affiliation.
