As we’ve documented here for the last two months, support for impeachment has been in a steady decline among independent voters since before the first public impeachment inquiry hearing started in November.

But as Nick Arama pointed out earlier, according to a new CNN poll support has dropped dramatically in recent weeks – with Democrats. It was 90% in a CNN poll among Democrats when Schiff’s show trials were underway, but now it’s at 77%, a 13% drop.

The news that CNN’s own polling showed even Democratic support in a freefall was just too much for CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin to handle. During a “New Day” segment on the polling numbers, Toobin declared that he simply did not believe the polling results. “That poll is wrong,” he exclaimed. Because he said so and stuff.

Mark Finkelstein at Newsbusters sets the scene:

Here was poor Jeffrey, in the depths of denial:

“I don’t believe that poll for one second, the 90 to 77%. I don’t believe it. It makes no sense that that number would change like that . . . David, that poll is wrong. Just because I said so, okay?”

Toobin stopped just short of stamping his feet, banging his fists, and knocking over his Lego tower.

The David in question was CNN political director David Chalian, who defended his own poll:

“I don’t know what’s not to believe. You call people on the telephone, you get their information. You pop out a survey. This is what those that we polled told us.”

The transcript at NB is great, but you really should watch the video clip just to see the looks on Toobin’s face as he’s discussing the poll.

You know what they say, Jeffrey Toobin. Denial is a river and all that.

That said, as CNN’s David Chalian pointed out, even with that drop in support among Democrats they still overwhelmingly support impeaching Trump. But the more their support peels off, the more nervous House Democrats in those vulnerable swing districts will become.
