The past couple of days have been a mixture of bad and good for the Very Online Left.
The bad news was them learning the hard way that perhaps First Lady Jill Biden is not quite as “woke” as they would like her to be.
The good news for them has, of course, been the formal arraignment of former President Donald Trump, although it was coupled with the disappointing (for them) news from Manhattan Judge Juan Merchan that no video cameras will be allowed in the courtroom, with photographers only being given “several minutes” to take photos on Tuesday.
In the midst of all the drama that has unfolded between the warring camps on the left and right as they showed up in front of the courthouse, however, have been some seemingly calmer moments, like when CNN political commentator Van Jones provided his reaction to how Trump, in his view, appeared.
“He looks sad,” Jones said. “He looks sad. He looks like, um, ah, the weight of its hitting him. And you know, just as a human being, I don’t take joy. I don’t like the prison system. I don’t like what it does to people. I don’t like this process. I don’t take any celebration in seeing him looking that way. He looks at it now — it doesn’t mean accountability is not owed.”
“We don’t know what he’s going to be charged with, there’s a lot more bump. But at that moment, that is not a conqueror. That is a granddad having a very bad day,” Jones said.

Now, reasonable people can disagree on how Trump looked as he arrived and while in the courtroom. I mean, yeah, it’s not a good day for him. And considering Trump’s been through several Democrat-orchestrated farcical circuses to get him before this one, I can see why some including Jones would characterize the way Trump looked as being someone who is feeling the weight of what’s been thrown at him by Soros-funded D.A. Alvin Bragg.
I don’t care who you are, after a certain point all the noise and drama can get to even the biggest of giants (perceived and otherwise).
The Very Online Left, however, didn’t see it that way, and even though Jones really wasn’t defending Trump, they erupted over Jones’ characterization, getting his name trending on Twitter by going off, with some of it being unprintable here.
Most, it seems, wanted to cancel Jones:
As a community, we need to organize how and when to pull up on Van Jones. I had to turn off CNN. He kept trying to make Trump a victim of an unjust court system. 🙄
Why attempt to humanize Trump as a grandfather and parent when he used his power as President to dehumanize us? pic.twitter.com/UDLFwk8XuQ

“This isn’t a grandpa getting arrested at Walmart for stealing Geritol. This is a klanpa who paid hush money for his illicit affairs and whose decades of criminal behavior has finally caught up to him. Be f**king for real Van Jones! #TrumpArraignment,” another wrote.
“Lol. You know what I always tell you guys about Van Jones,” failed former CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien tweeted.
Jones, it would appear, is not liked by the right nor the left, which probably suits him just fine. But even with that in mind, one can pause to appreciate it when a political commentator – especially on CNN, and especially someone like Van Jones – can step back and take a breath and look at the human side of the equation in these things.
