The Cringe Gretchen Whitmer-'Talking Potato' Video That You Can't Unsee

We've seen some pretty cringe photos and videos from elected officials and wannabe politicos over the years, some staged and some not, with some that come to mind revolving around the tried and failed election year "grillin' and chillin'" photo ops that typically go over like lead balloons.

More recently, we saw President Joe Biden pose for photos in front of a large menu screen during a North Carolina Cook Out fast food restaurant pit stop, only to be embarrassed later when it was pointed out that their combo trays cost a lot more now than they did just a few weeks before the 2020 presidential election, during Biden's previous visit to the same Cook Out location.

The latest instance of a carefully scripted maximum cringe moment from a Democrat comes courtesy of Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. While she has become synonymous with the word "cringe" during her time as Michigan's governor, a video she posted to the Twitter machine Tuesday just might take the cake.

In the clip, Whitmer has a weird back-and-forth exchange with a creepy-looking "talking potato" named Professor Potato about a plan she's going to push during her Wednesday State of the State address that involves two years of "free" community college education:

It was an unusual way to announce a major policy priority, but using a talking potato, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said Tuesday that she plans to ask lawmakers to help fund two years of free community college for all high school graduates.

The social media post featured Whitmer telling a talking spud named Professor Potato that because “every Michigander deserves an opportunity to go to college without frying their bank account,” she will use her State of the State address Wednesday night to make the request.

What made it even more "what in the world?" was at the end Whitmer herself had also turned into a talking potato. Yep, that actually happened:

While some on Twitter quipped that Whitmer had hired former CNN media hall monitor Brian Stelter as an actor for her videos, others wondered when exactly it was that potatoes got teeth.

Though the "talking potato" ad was funny for all the wrong reasons, on a more serious note Senate GOPers in the Great Lakes State pointed out how much the price of potatoes had gone up since Gretch took office:

Yikes. Hopefully, more Michiganders are growing their own potatoes these days. Unless she's banned that, too.  Then again, after watching that video, some people may not have an appetite for potatoes anymore. Can't say that I'd blame them.

There's no word yet on whether Professor Potato will be in attendance during the speech, but we'll keep ya posted...
