Remember that awful ice storm that slammed Texas causing power outages two years ago? Remember the furor that arose when Senator Ted Cruz took a trip to Cancun with his family in the middle of it all? Cruz was ripped up one side and down the other for “abandoning” the Lone Star State in the midst of the crisis, never mind that there was little the Senator himself could have done to remedy the situation in the moment.

I like Senator Cruz, but I can agree that the timing and optics of his trip weren’t great – and he’s acknowledged the same himself. But given the way the story was covered by the legacy media at the time, one would expect said media to perhaps be seeking a word presently with California Governor Gavin Newsom.

You see, parts of California have had massive amounts of snow dumped on them over the past week. While snow isn’t unheard of in the Golden State, this particular system has been an absolute beast, dropping over 17 feet of snow in some areas and leaving thousands without power. While Newsom (rightly) declared a state of emergency for 13 counties on Wednesday, he’s since gone strangely missing, having left the state for “personal travel.”

Now, I certainly don’t expect Newsom to haul snow and fly rescue missions himself. But if it was dastardly for a U.S. Senator to take a trip with his family while his home state suffered the effects of a massive storm, surely the same standard ought apply to a state’s chief executive, no?
