It was somehow fitting that the total dumpster fire that was the RNC Convention’s first day ended with a near blasphemous benediction and a controversy over Melania Trump’s speech.

I think it is safe to say that a lot of people were surprised last night when Melania Trump (who is allegedly called “die dritte Frau” by Donald Trump in moments of high passion when he’s howling Adolph Hitler speeches) blithely used nearly the same words to describe the way she sees her family as did Michelle Obama in 2008. (As an aside, it was also interesting that Michelle Obama referred to the way she an Barack Obama were raised and the values they were trying to pass on, Melania refers only the her own upbringing and the values she, personally, is trying to instill in her son. Interesting.)

This morning, alleged Russian mob fixer Paul Manafort was on CNN with Chris Cuomo and the subject came up.

This is stupid and it is degrading to anyone who happens to listen to it. How is Melania Trump a threat to Hillary Clinton? How does a speechwriter lifting similar phraseology demean Melania Trump? Cuomo gives Manafort a graceful out and he refuses to even acknowledge it. Does anyone believe Melania Trump wrote this? Surely, the fabulously wealthy Trump’s can do what everyone else does… hire a speechwriter.

But there is more interesting stuff in the speech that is causing some stir.

He will never, ever, give up. And, most importantly, he will never, ever, let you down.

Does this sound familiar?

The reference, of course, is this:

Melania Trump’s speechwriter not only lifted Michelle Obama’s phrasing but went ahead and rickrolled her for good measure.

Somewhere, in the leaky basement of a Trump property, a speechwriter is being held captive and calling out for help. He sent a signal in the only way possible, just like Admiral Jeremiah Denton spelling T-O-R-T-U-R-E by blinking Morse code.
