FILE – In this June 7, 2017 file photo, James Wolfe, then-director of security with the Senate Intelligence Committee, waits for the start of a hearing with the nation’s national security chiefs about Russia’s election meddling, on Capitol Hill in Washington. Federal prosecutors are accusing Wolfe with lying to the FBI about contact he had with reporters who covered the committee. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite, file)
Back in June, the former director of security for the Senate Intelligence Committee, James Wolfe, was indicted for passing classified information to a female reporter in exchange for sex. He seems to have been under the illusion that he was in a relationship and not party to a commercial transaction but there is little in the record to substantiate that view of what happened. Wolfe divulged information to his paramour that revealed identities and inner workings of the committee. In addition, he lied to FBI agents when questioned about his contacts with sweet thing.
Now that he’s pleaded guilty and prosecutors are seeking a two-year prison sentence,

we get a master’s class in how the Swamp circles the wagons to protect their allies.
As part of his sentencing submission, Wolfe included a letter signed by Senate Intel Chair Burr, Vice Chair Warner, and former chair Feinstein asking for leniency – "we ask that the totality of his service and career be taken into consideration" https://t.co/lyWa2y1xME pic.twitter.com/xR0exAxik9

Note that a Republican Senator headlines this list.
Unsurprisingly, the Clapper piled on:
WOW. James Clapper writes a letter of support for House leaker James Wolfe! Pretty stunning considering under his watch @SharylAttkisson’s computer was tampered with, @AP phones were subpoenaed and @JamesRosenTV was terrorized all because Clapper LOATHED leakers. pic.twitter.com/mmzxuVMaxW

Keep in mind that Mike Flynn is awaiting sentencing for lying to federal agents when even the FBI agents who interviewed him didn’t think he’d lied to them. These two cases show exactly how official Washington works.
If you are part of the in-crowd and casually break federal law and damage the security of the nation for the sake of sex, don’t worry. Everything will be alright. The people leading the committee you betrayed will go to bat for you. They’ll say that your hurt feelings at being outed as a higher-class john was sufficient punishment for the crime. If, on the other hand, you aren’t part of the clique, then even a finding by FBI counterintelligence agents that you are not deceptive can be set aside and you can be indicted for lying to those same agents.
