Lindsey Graham and Chuck Grassley Announce That Mueller Theater Is Officially Over in the US Senate

At the conclusion of yesterday’s hearing by the Senate Judiciary Committee featuring the testimony by Attorney General Bill Barr, the chairman, South Carolina Senatory Lindsey Graham, and the chairman-emeritus, Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley put House Democrats on notice that whatever theater they are cooking up, they will not have a partner in the Senate.

This is Lindsey Graham

Sorry, wrong clip

GRAHAM: I’m going to write Mr. Mueller a letter. I’m going to ask him if he has any dispute with what Mr. Barr said about the conversation that was just described. Senator Blumenthal, give him a chance to correct the record if he thought that Attorney General Barr in any way misrepresented the findings of this report. And that will be it. I thought that the Attorney General did a very good job. I thouht the committee asked very good, hard, probing questions. And I am confident that this investigation of the Trump campaign was thorough, complete, exhaustive. There was no collusion with the Russian government by the Trump campaign. And the obstruction of justice charges in this case are, quite frankly absurd. And if you think the president did something wrong, then impeachment would be the answer because he’s not going to be indicted. And nothing would be said if they based impeachment on the Mueller report. I’ll take one quick question.

QUESTION: Why not call for Mueller to testify?

GRAHAM: I’m not going to do anymore. Enough, already. Its over. If there’s any dispute about a conversation then he’ll come, but I’m not going to retry the case. I’m not going to call him again. It. Is. Over.

When Chuck Grassley isn’t defending ethanol subsidies or some other Iowa-centric farm handout, he can be a hardcore conservative warrior. This is classic Grassley.

QUESTION: The last time he was here they said, “Has Bob Mueller expressed any concerns to you?” He said no, he doesn’t know of any concerns. He had a letter that clearly said there are concerns.

SEN. CHUCK GRASSLEY: He had a conversation and you heard him say, and I have to assume Mueller said it to him, that he was only concerned about how the media played it.

Here’s where we are. The Democrats and you folks in the media are not concerned about the report. I think you’re concerned about the results weren’t what you expected. And I think we’re finding out that everybody was sold a bunch of snake oil, and now the jig is up.

With no support from the senate, and what mouthbreathing lackwits like Mazie Hirono want doesn’t really count, the oxygen fueling this low level conflagration will burn out. The Democrats are going to be deprived of their Cecil B. DeMille production when Barr doesn’t show, when Justice doesn’t release the full Mueller report to them directly (see Bill Barr and Department of Justice Tells Fat Jerry Nadler Where He Can Put His Subpoenas), and when Mueller isn’t given clearance to testify. This leaves them the choices of moving on to other means of harassing President Trump and his family or undertaking a clearly doomed impeachment proceeding that roughly 2/3 of the nation opposes on the subject of “obstruction.”

“It’s over,” may turn out to be a very nice summation.
