The People Pushing For Impeachment Are Fooling Themselves About Its Popularity

This morning, USA Today released a poll showing that support of the impeachment of President Trump is growing.

Americans by a 45%-38% plurality now support a vote by the House of Representatives to impeach President Donald Trump, a USA TODAY/Ipsos Poll finds, as allegations continue to swirl around an embattled White House.

By a similar margin, 44%-35%, those surveyed say the Senate, which would then be charged with holding a trial of the president, should convict Trump and remove him from office.

The survey of 1,006 adults, taken Tuesday and Wednesday, underscores the perilous situation the president finds himself in as House committees subpoena documents and prepare to hear testimony into accusations that he pressured the leader of Ukraine to investigate a political rival, then tried to hide the account of their phone conversation.

Meh.

What the poll shows is essentially that all Democrats want to impeach Trump. What that 45% may or may not be a plurality, the real question whether, as more of the story leaks out, is that number a floor or ceiling. Looking back a the Russia Hoax, you find a similar dynamic. Early on when the Democrats were driving the narrative, there were a lot of Americans who believed that hokum. As the facts began to trickle out, and in particular when Mueller’s report was released, there was nothing left of the collusion narrative. That’s why it isn’t even mentioned as a potential article of impeachment because the story was so obviously fake that not even partisan Democrats want to be associated with it.

We have a hint of where impeachment stands in another poll

President Trump’s approval ticked up to 49 percent — its highest mark this year, according to a new Hill-HarrisX survey released on Wednesday.

The figure marks a 2-point increase from a Sept. 11-12 poll, but a 2-point decrease from its previous peak of 51 percent in August 2018.

Trump’s disapproval rating, meanwhile, dropped to 51 percent, which marks his lowest level so far this year.

This indicates that not only is there no nascent groundswell for impeachment but that a lot of people are seeing this latest nonsense for the political hit that is is. The public was burned by the media and the Democrats of the Russia Hoax, a very complex fake scandal that made the pushing of fake information and fake news very easy. The easily understand this scandal. You have a powerful man who gets his grifting ne’er-do-well son a very lucrative job. When the son gets in trouble, he uses his clout to get the investigator fired. We can argue to the cows come home over whether this is accurate but it is a narrative that you can’t counter until you show how Hunter Biden got the job if his name was Heywood Jablowme.

As we learn more about the whistleblower (yes, Bulwarkians and Vichy Republicans, the whisleblower’s motives are important to the public) and about the interactions Schiff and his posse had with the whistleblower and as we get the backstory on several mysterious actions by Michael Atkinson, the IC IG, the number of people supporting impeachment is going to recede.
