Senator Lindsey Graham was apparently watching Fox News when Dana Perino suggested moving Attorney General Jeff Sessions to fill the spot at the Department of Homeland Security left vacant by John Kelly.
Perino’s motivation seemed to be that this would make it easier to hire someone who would fire Robert Mueller and end the Russia probe.
While there has been no specific call to make that happen, it has apparently been added to the rumor mill.
From the Washington Examiner:
In a pair of tweets Saturday, Graham, R-S.C., said “AG Jeff Sessions has a good ring to it.”
He went on to list off the qualities he thinks makes Sessions the right fit as attorney general. “Highly qualified, committed to the rule of law, tough on crime, and fiercely independent,” he said.
That part about his being committed to the rule of law is what got him attacked this week by President Trump.
Graham went on:
“DHS Secretary Jeff Sessions doesn’t sound right, doesn’t feel right,” he said. “Bad idea.”
Trump began rearranging the chairs on the deck last week. He brought in Anthony Scaramucci as communications director/house entertainment, which resulted in White House press secretary Sean Spicer running for the exit. Sarah Huckabee Sanders was then moved into his spot.
After a week of Sessions-bashing and Scaramucci publicly targeting Reince Priebus as a “leaker,” Priebus was booted and John Kelly was moved from Homeland Security to the chief of staff position.
This is what happens when you try to run government like a reality TV show.
Trump was so busy playing his staff against each other that he forgot to lead and the repeal bill got away from him.
But back on topic, Graham thinks there are others who could fill in at the head of DHS.
In the Politico article Graham shared on Twitter, Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, and Thomas Homan, acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, are also listed as contenders.
Whatever the case and however it turns, Graham has made it known that firing Sessions will not go well.
Graham on Thursday issued a warning to Trump if he were to let go of Sessions.
“If Jeff Sessions is fired, there will be holy hell to pay,” Graham said outside a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Thursday.
All the more reason Trump should turn off Fox News and begin listening to his advisers and Cabinet members.
