As Far as Politicians Go, Trey Gowdy Considers Himself Pretty Lousy (He Really Said That?)

Representative Trey Gowdy will probably be doing a series of farewell interviews. After last week’s House Intelligence Committee memo drop, Gowdy was the Republican voice from that committee to emerge and basically tell everyone to calm down. It’s not that bad.

There were also some revelations about why the fiery former prosecutor is walking away.

Among those revelations – He considers himself a “lousy politician.”

“My wife hates it when I say this, but I was a pretty good prosecutor, I think. But I’ve been a pretty lousy politician,” Gowdy told CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

“So I’ve done it for seven years. I’m really grateful for the opportunity to do it, but it’s time for me to — whatever time I’ve got left — I want to spend it in the justice system because that’s where my heart is.”

We’ve probably all seen Gowdy hardcore questioning of witnesses in the IRS investigation, Benghazi, and Hillary Clinton’s email scandal. They’re things of true beauty, and you can see his prosecutor chops at play.

Maybe that doesn’t make him the best politician, but why would he say he’s a lousy politician?

Because he apparently doesn’t consider himself a partisan.

Saying he could see “multiple sides of a single issue,” he also offered:

“And the fact that someone disagrees with me, does not make me challenge their love of the country. It doesn’t make me believe that they’re corrupt. I’ve got a lot of friends on the other side of the aisle,” he said.

WAIT – You mean you don’t have to agree and walk in lockstep on every issue? You can actually disagree and still be friends?

Crazy concept.

“And look, every hero I have has lost. Every one of them. So losing is not the worst thing in the world,” Gowdy added in the interview broadcast Sunday morning.

“Not knowing what you believe and not caring enough about it to fight for it? That’s the worst thing in the world.”

He’s not wrong.

So he’s returning to the justice system. He’s going home.
