I’m outta here.
While this is no surprise, yet, it is a surprise.
As president Trump was heading out to the Army-Navy game he stopped to talk with reporters before boarding Marine One to confirm that his embattled chief of staff, John Kelly, would be leaving his post by the end of the year.
From USA Today
Former White House chief of staff John Kelly, who was assigned toi bring a level of discipline to President Donald Trump’s often chaotic administration, is leaving the post after months of internal tensions increasingly spilled into view, Trump said Saturday.
“John Kelly will be leaving toward the end of the year,” the president told reporters as he left the White House for the Army-Navy game in Philadelphia.
While the two men have clashed in recent months, Trump called Kelly “a great guy.”
Kelly’s decision ends a tumultuous 17-month tenure in which he tried, but largely failed, to bring a Marine Corps-style order to a White House that has hewed more closely to the freewheeling management style Trump embraced as a New York businessman.
While Kelly may not have been able to reign in Trump fully, he did bring more order to the chaos of the first six months of the Trump White House. This allowed for among other things the Trump tax bill to be ushered through Congress and get signed with a more focused White House.
The word in D.C. is that Trump has already selected Nick Ayers, chief of staff to Vice President Mike Pence to take over for Kelly as his chief of staff. Ayers has been in that job with V.P. Pence about the same amount of time that Kelly has been with President Trump.
Will the 36-year-old Ayers be able to keep this White House in check nearly as well as Kelly has?
We will all see in real time if he is indeed POTUS 45 pick for his next chief. Stay tuned.
I know you will.
