Turn down the outrage meter before you twist yourself into a stale crusty pretzel.

Last night in Battle Creek Michigan the newly impeached 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, cracked a poorly crafted joke about the late Congressman John Dingell in the late congressman’s home state. My colleague Streiff covered this earlier here The Left and NeverTrump Creates Yet Another Fake Controversy Over a Dead Democrat Joke at Red State.

Now, I fully understand that this President does not do what “other’ Presidents in the past have done. Namely, have people other than themselves go and hatchet the hell out of opponents so their hands are clean. Donald Trump has no time for that and I believe rather relishes the opportunity to throw a line out there himself to see the reaction.

Was it a shining moment during that rally? No.

Should he have mentioned it? I know I would have stayed away from it.

However, one of the things that made John Dingell a “legendary” figure in American politics was that he was a bit of notorious jerk to people. If you were on his side he was a great ally. If you were opposing him you could expect to get berated and beat down with an incredibly sharp and caustic wit. After his passing in Feb of this year, the stories of people telling how they were on both sides of the receiving end of his love and ire were endless and mostly retold with fondness.

Our friends over at Twitchy happened to come across a tweet from Dingell from 2016 telling Trump to go to “Hell” over his comments about John McCain. Who also, by the way, was lauded after death for telling people how to stick things in places and where to go in the afterlife.

Just a brief glimpse today on social media and specifically Twitter ( don’t you EVER change you wonderful tweeters) revealed to me that many people whom I know and have heard them share bad jokes about people were just slightly short of delirious outrage about Trump’s remark.

Why?

Did you know Dingell personally? If you did, I suppose that might get your blood boiling but it also should remind you that John was able to deal a sarcastic inappropriate joke better than most. If you didn’t, then you have to be in no way surprised that Trump will take the opportunity to crack a really bad joke.

The thing that everyone needs to take a step back and realize is that as long as Donald Trump is breathing he will act like Donald Trump. Whether he is President for the next year or five, this is how it is going to roll. Trump is not a “counter-puncher” as people always say but a flat out savage when he feels attacked. You can make a rational argument against his governing style and policies but getting all twisted up about a low-class joke is making you look silly.

When it is ok for the former “Dean” of the House or the Senior Senator from Arizona to berate people with their unique brand of low brow humor than it was only a matter of time before someone that was elected President would do the same. Elected officials are just people that we elect in two, four or six-year intervals and are really no more dynamic or special than the rest of us. They are simply just a reflection of us.

That is what you should really be mad about if anything.

I’m sure wherever John Dingell is now, he cracked up at the comment that Trump made last night and had a much harsher response.

Tis a shame that none of us could hear it.
