Britain Can't Even Protect Its Own From Islamist Threats—MP Steps Down Citing Danger to Personal Safety

Mike Freer is a British MP (Member of Parliament) in the United Kingdom. He is a member of the Conservative Party and also happens to be gay. Why is that relevant? Those last two factors have apparently made him a target of Islamic fundamentalists in Britain, and threats to his safety as well as actual attacks on other MPs from Islamists have resulted in his decision to step down. The Free Press's Oliver Wiseman has the story.

Two and a half years ago, a member of Britain’s parliament was murdered in a church in southeast England where he was meeting his constituents. Ali Harbi Ali, a 25-year-old who called himself a soldier of the Islamic State, said “Sorry” to David Amess before pulling a knife from his pocket and stabbing the Conservative lawmaker repeatedly in the stomach. When two constituents heard Amess’s screams and rushed into the room, Ali said simply, “I’ve killed him.”

In an interview with police after his arrest, Ali said that a month before the attack, he had visited the constituency of Mike Freer, another Conservative MP, armed with the intent to harm.

“That’s when I bought the stab vest,” Freer tells me over the phone from his home in his constituency of Finchley and Golders Green, a leafy corner of northwest London once represented by Margaret Thatcher and home to one of the UK’s largest Jewish communities.

Last week, Freer, 63 and a justice minister in the British government, took an even more dramatic measure to protect his safety. He announced that he will be stepping down at the next election because of the “intolerable stress” on his husband and extended family from the “several serious threats to my personal safety.”

Lesson to Europe in general and Britain in particular: When you import millions of people from Third World crapholes, do not be surprised when they act like people from Third World crapholes. While I can understand Mr. Freer's concern for his safety and the safety of his family, especially after the attack on his colleague, if our elected officials react to this kind of intimidation by buckling under, where are we then?

This is a nation, mind you, that after the fall of France in 1940, had a major newspaper run a cartoon showing a British soldier, his Enfield rifle in his right hand, shaking his left fist at a sky filled with German bombers, with the caption, "Very Well - Alone." What happened to Britain?

It's important to note that Britain did this to themselves. Ditto for Europe. They threw open the doors to immigration from northern Africa and the Middle East. Millions have flooded into the British Isles and Europe, many intending to take advantage of famously generous social welfare benefits while showing little or no inclination to adopt the cultures of their host countries - in fact, some European cities now boast Islamic "no-go" zones that even the police won't enter. And, as the case of Mr. Freer and his colleagues shows very clearly, they have no intent of assimilating, instead demanding, through the threat of violence, that Europe assimilate to their culture.

We should learn from the example of Europe. Here in the United States, we have also thrown open the doors. Millions have crossed our southern border, and I know this is a point I keep making, but apparently, it can't be said enough: We have no idea who most of these people are, where they intend to go, or what they intend to do when they get there.

Here's the end result in the case of Mr. Freer:

Even as he heads for the exits, Freer, with British understatement, attempts to downplay the forces that have pushed him out of his job. When I ask him whether he thinks any of his parliamentary colleagues will avoid standing up for Israel—or against antisemitism—in the face of these dangers, he bristles at the suggestion: “No, no, I think most of us would take the contrary view. I’ve been very clear that I won’t be intimidated to be quiet on things I believe in.”

Except for the fact that you’re stepping down, I point out.

“True. True. Well, certainly not in parliament. Certainly not in the House of Commons, but it doesn’t mean I won’t continue to advocate for Israel and the Jewish community. So it’s a fair point. I suppose in some ways they have silenced me, but there you go.”

In some ways, nothing. The Islamist nuts have achieved what they set out to do with an actual act of terrorism: They have silenced a political figure, using threats of violence to force him to step down from his elected position or face attack and possibly death. Britain, once a nation with an empire on which the sun literally never set, now can't even ensure the safety of its own elected officials.

That can't be tolerated in a civilized society. And yet, here we are.
